The Bridge Run 2010

Part of our HCC program was to complete the 2010 Cooper River 10K Bridge Run!  I did it!!!  I am very proud that this completed my total commitment to the program, and, most of all, to myself.  My goal was to run a mile and power walk the second one.  Well guess what!!  I ran the entire 10K, with the exception of the short incline going up the bridge (one Porta-Potty break).  Officially, I did this run in 1 hour, 44 minutes, but if I were knock off about 15 minutes for the potty break that makes it somewhere around 1.5 hours.  I am very proud to have finished.  The first time I did the bridge run I walked it with my husband and it took us almost 3 hours.  I was so out of shape.  Thanks again to my trainer, Laurie, for preparing me for this.  Thank you to all my instructors and coach Marty again.  I know listening to you is what got me in shape to do this.   I wish I had a little more African in me since the Kenya man did it in 27 minutes.....I am still happy with my number.

Laurie sent me an email the day before the race, encouraging me, which I thought was so nice.  She always told me to fix my mind on something.  So I ran for so many people...    ...my mother who would be so proud of me I can hear her yelling for me...    ...my dad who is recovering from a pretty serious surgery...       ...my youngest sister who has struggled with a disability and is helping him now....     ...my sister who will be taking radiation soon...     ...all my family, who I love dearly.  I could hear my kids say "Mom, you can do this!"  I know they were proud.  I would text my miles to all my family and some friends along the way.  I did not stop.  My last mile I had to pray.  I felt like slowing down a little and when I did I felt a little dizzy and talked myself out of passing out.  The mind is a wonderful thing.  All I wanted to see is Ben's face at the end of this run, because he is the consistent and stable one who is always there at the end of the day.  I feel like a true athlete now.  I put my mind to it, and I did it.  I thought of and now appreciate all the years of hard work that young athletes dedicate themselves to who compete for the olympics.


In preparation for the bridge, I loaded up with wheat pasta and protein about  three days prior.  I actually spent the night with my friends in Mt. Pleasant.  Pam made wheat pasta with veggies...since she knows I don't eat hamburger meat.  It was delicious!  We had fun the night before playing cards and sipping a little homemade wine.  I stayed up too late, but somehow I felt rested.  I had to put on about 4 pounds since the challenge however, split between muscle and that pasta.  I also have a little swelling, so give me a little break.  I am not unhappy about that because I needed the fuel and calories to do the bridge run.  I have a goal to  lose 10 pounds over the next 6 weeks.  So I am sorry friends, I will still be at the gym for a busy workout routine.  I promise that in May, I will have a little more time to play with you.

Thank you

First, I want to say that I went to our convention in Myrtle Beach this weekend, and I ran 2 miles on the beach to ensure that I stick to my promise to continue to live a healthy life style.  I cannot tell you how I used to envy people who would get up and do that and, yes, now I am one of those people.  I love it.  Hearing the waves, feeling the fresh air on my face, hair blowing in the wind.  Sounds corny, but it's the truth!!  Most of all, I reflected on how much I love the water. So I give thanks first to our God!  I have not used my blog for biblical use in my prior posts, in a conscious awareness that I don't push my beliefs on others who are looking for weigh loss information, but I could not leave out a praise and thank you to He who made this possible -- God above.  How wonderfully he has made us!  I did not break anything or die from sweating or from doing any of the workouts!  Yes, he made us to bend, jump and move to our full range of motion.  Meditation on the beach is wonderful!  I highly recommend it.




 Next in line, but not least, is my best friend, my husband.  He has dealt with an extreme change in diet (almost completely vegetarian), and a wife he could classify as MIA.  He has been understanding and patient beyond what I could ask.  He even became more of the household manager after getting off from work.  I love him for allowing me this time, and I promise that in a few weeks I will be more balanced in my journey.  Ben got a little worried when he saw me looking at the Discovery channel, broadcasting a documentary about pandas.  He was terrified that the light bulb over my head meant that we too would be eating bamboo next.    Check out how we looked before and how we look together today (someone really did think Ben was with a younger woman). 
Thank you Ben for being with me in sickness and NOW in health.  You are #1 person in my book! 


Next I would like to thank Janice Newton, because without her, I would not have gotten in this program that I wanted so badly to be a part of.  Janice listened to my cries.  She looked beyond the words on my application.  She knew I was ready since I had already loss 30 pounds.  Janice I will never forget you!   You are helping change lives!!!  




My trainers have been most important in my journey.  My main trainer Laurie has encouraged me to work to my full potential.  She did not give up on me when she saw me limping and could not walk a mile, let alone run one.  She has taught me how to do burpees and other exercises.  I can't believe I am still doing them at home.  Thank you Laurie, for aiding me to not only walk, but to RUN.  I will never forget you.  I love your smile and this photo of us.  
 Another trainer that I must express my sincere thanks to, the one who my husband wanted to come hunt down at times, but truly appreciated his dedication as much I do, is Marty.  Marty teaches swim aerobics, and is very good at what he does.  He would take his time to clock me while I was swimming laps, even though it was outside his normal working hours.  He has gone above and beyond his job encouraging me when I just wanted to cry and give up due to sore muscles and anxiety, which happens at some points during the program.  Marty is also a vegan, so he gives great nutritional advice.  Marty I will never forget your simple words that kept me going,  "You're not tired!" I will never allow a workout tire me out to the point of giving up because of you.  I must get your photo this week for my blog.  Thank you so much. Agape!

I miss you, and I am crying as I write this.  We were only a small bump in the road.  We did not end in last place.  We fought. We tried, and did not give up.  We worked when we were told. We cried and wiped each other tears.  We laughed when we needed to.  Remember when I backed up my butt into the water fountain and it looked like I wet my pants?   I know you thought Laurie made me pee my pants doing those  burpees.



Here we stand...so different.  Overcoming so many obstacles.....we did it.  This week is not the same without you.   Let's stay on this journey!   Laurie said we had HEART! She would have us over any other team.  I will never forget her saying that because we know we were a challenge.


Thank you Dad, for following my blog and supporting me through this journey.  To my sisters who, no matter how tired you were when you got off the night shift, you followed my blog and cheered me on.  Who fought cancer during these 10 weeks while I fought these pounds.  I gained strength from you. 

My son, who was my secret trainer from a far distance, and my daughter who cheered me on, listening to my moans, and loves me unconditionally, even when I could not call or text.  Thank you grandkids, for thinking I am "Auntie" and not grandma!  I will get back to the nice gifts and Skype visits real soon. I will see you in just a few months.  ( I will be in even better shape!)


Thank you to my dear friends Wendy and Kristen, who are my sisters and who continued to encourage me in my journey, both spiritually and for physical training support.  I loved our walks on the bridge.  We all share great encouraging stories with each other.  We are also all juicers now.   I looked forward to our time spent together.  I had to laugh, because we are all "take charge" women and hard workers, which bind us together.  They showed up at the final weigh in, without my knowledge, to support me, WIN or Lose!  They are their for me.  I am blessed!

Melancholy!

Well now back to the "real life" without HCC, except for my weekly weigh-in which, as you know, will continue for the next couple of weeks.

I was kinda happy and kinda sad today.  Melancholy is the word!  Do you remember when you were on a ferris wheel and you went up and around, and then had to come down when the ride ended?  It leaves butterflyies in your stomach even after you're back on the ground.  You say to yourself, "that's it!".  You don't want it to be really over, but you know you have to get back to life.  So off you go with a little sadness.  It's really over!  Did I really end 1st in the percentage of weight loss for women?  Yes, I did!  However, my journey is not over, by no means.  Today I  was really tired from yesterday's workout, and the excitement of our last meeting together.  And to add to all this my father was very ill which added even more stress.  (I found out today that Dad is finally making improvements.)  We ran and we lifted weights.  Nothing like what I have been doing the last few days, but I felt good to get up early and keep my commitment.  I think my body is trying to recover from such a busy day yesterday.  The ceremony was nice but I don't want to end it here......

I promised pictures yesterday but they take a lot of time to download, re-size, and post, so I hope you all understand that I have to postpone the photos and take a little time to rest.  In addition to my early-morning workout today, I had a lot of  errands to run in preparation for our upcoming trip.  So I am putting everything else on hold till Monday -- all the thank you's and sentiments.  I am just still very tired.  I promise I will run on the beach this weekend.  I promise I will use the gym at our hotel, and lastly I promise I will eat healthy meals.

FINAL WEIGH- IN

I Won the Healthy Charleston Challenge!!!!(female) 

This week I lost 4.8 pounds.  Believe me I had to work for it.  I am very proud I might say.  This was not an easy program.  It took focus, determination and endurance.  I have a lot of supporters I would like to thank tomorrow but I am much too tired to just write any old thing.  I was so happy to see my husband after a long stressful day.  He has taken a lot of fantastic photos which I will post tomorrow.  My other two biggest supporters, Wendy and Kristin, came to see me win without my knowlege, which was so sweet.  Another great surprise was one of my new clients, Beth, that I am training.  She came with her two beautiful  children.  I was proud to have such supportive friends.  WOW!  I have to go reflect on this one.  Please tune in tomorrow so I can share photos of the event with you.

Total loss on my journey - 65.8 pounds.  Hey kids that's more than anyone of my grandkids.  (think about it) This grandma is no joke now!!!

Last Team Work

Today was our last workout as a team.  It was a bittersweet pill.  So many emotions going on.  Everyone was in attendance, with the exception of two.  I knew our trainer Laurie was going to kill us today.  We ran 2 miles!!!   My finish my time was 12 minutes, compared to the 17 minutes I did the last time I ran.  (I hope my memory serves me right on this one.)  We did burpees.  We did everything that she taught us plus.  I had no time to enjoy her praises as she is commending me because it's time to get more cardio on the rower and do another mile.  I prayed to get through this workout today.  Just when I thought it was over,"I hear get a mat!".  I am getting tired writing about this.  All I can say is that I felt about 2 pounds melt off of me!  Laurie gave us a nice pep talk at the end, telling us how far we have come.  She also mentioned my first day trying to sprint up the stairs.  I really thought I was going to either die or have a heart attack.  She was shocked when I asked to do the stairs last week.  It was nice going down memory lane.  After all, I have spent more time with this team than I have with anyone else in the past 11 weeks.  So our goodbyes will be sad.

Friday will be hard because, for the last 3 months, Fridays have been spent with our team workout.  So I will go to the gym early in the morning and workout with my small team outside of HCC.  Later that day, I plan to get pampered at the hair and nail salon.  I need a pedicure badly!  I'm looking like a "jock" (or something) now.

We are leaving for Myrtle Beach for the weekend (Bible convention).  My hubby just told me we have a room facing the ocean and a small kitchenette, just in case I wanted to bring my healthy foods.  Oh I might add, he made sure that they have a workout center, and both indoor and outdoor pools. (Yippy!) I will be able to workout on Saturday for a least an hour. 

Everyone was making plans on keeping Laurie as a trainer at a time that I cannot make that same comitment.  I am confident that I will continue my program and journey.  In fact, it will be on paper by tomorrow.  Even though tomorrow we formally graduate, we never really do.  We still must keep ourselves healthy.  This means eating the right foods and continual workouts.  I feel I have formed a HABIT -- in fact somewhat of an addiction to the gym. I have noticed that my body loves it now.   I will work on, maintaining more balance, so that it will not crowd out the more important things.  I am going to be a member of the Wellness Center and very thankful to have that one month free.  I would rather have this than cable......I did not just say that Ben!   I cannot imagine living without a gym so close to home, in walking or running distance.  We still have to weigh-in for 6 weeks after the program, so we can stay on track.  I am sure my family and friends will help me with the maintaining balance part.

Tomorrow we'll get the final numbers for the competition segment of the HCC program.  I have told myself over and over that if I do not win the contest, I truly have already won.  I have gained my life back, as I have said before.    I will take photos.  Everyone will be missed.  I am not looking forward to saying goodbye to the young students who weigh us.  They played as big a part in my journey as everyone else in the program have.

Nia Day

Today was my first experience with class dedicated solely to Nia.  This class was just what the doctor ordered.  They called this "modern dance" in my day.  We use our body as art..... our instructor started off by saying how important movements and facial expressions are.  I loved the way we symbolically lifted the weight of something burdensome in our lives and threw it across the room!  Sounds crazy but it worked for me.  I certainly had a lot of weight to throw this week.  Dad is still having some complications.  I will know more tomorrow.  In the meantime, I danced.  Something  I would not have done in the past.  I would have sat home and worried.  I am learning new ways to cope.  Just Dance!  I felt beautiful!  I felt so much lighter on my feet for that moment.  I will refer back to this moment over and over again.

For right now I am going DANCE my butt to bed.  Another busy day ahead.  I really appreciate all the support.

Monday. What A DAY!

Our Monday workout has kicked my butt.  I came home and had to lay down for half an hour.  Running, burpees, sandbags, squats, sit-ups...    ...oh my!!!  Then off to walk the bridge at 2:30.  I have two walking partners outside of HCC now, Wendy and Kristin.  (They don't know it, but they are my a part of my maintenance program.)  And, you guessed it, I ended my night in the pool.  Tonight when Marty says,  "You're not tired!"  I wanted to yell "Oh yes I am!"   I know he says this to push us mentally.  And it works!  Thank you Marty!!

My dad is still in the hospital.  They did laproscopic surgery today that was not successful.  Not sure what is next till tomorrow.  Why this week of all weeks?  This is just life!  Stress is not good for weight loss, but I am proving a point to myself -- I don't need food to comfort me.  I just need my pillow.  May my pillow surround me with it's tender love.  As it softly puts me to sleep.  Hey I am just practising relaxation.  Don't laugh.  BREATHE.  BREATHE.  RELAX.

Sunday No Longer A Day Of Rest

I can remember when Sunday was more of a day of rest.  Not anymore.  Off to the Wellness Center for the mandatory group class.  Thinking to myself that I no longer have to run in the bathroom, throwing off the heels and dress.  Oops!  And the pearls that don't match my workout gear.  As I said, Sunday will not be a gym day in the future.  I just wanted to end, saying to myself I never missed a group workout required by the program.  I will think of activities that will keep me moving on Sunday, but, generally, it will be a more family-oriented day.

Class was with that maniac Lilly.  That young lady is rough, but I like her workout.  She provided us with a great cardio workout so that we can burn a lot of calories for Thursday's weigh-in.  All of the HCC people were working hard today, though.  Some were just trying to add more pounds lost to their total weight loss, and some are fighting for the title of first place.  We all know who they are.  I was extremely tired in this class, I think, because of the time change.  My father is in the hospital so I am horribly scared that an emergency will require me to leave to go out of town.  His surgery is tomorrow and I am hoping for the best.  I kept pushing and trying to do all her moves and relieving my mind of the stress.

The day ended nice.  We went out to a private little area on Folly Beach.    My husband is a retired Navy photographer and is going to take photo's for some friends' wedding.  So off we go to check out location.  I decided to fit in a little workout by sprinting my way down the path leading to the Morris Island Lighthouse.  On the way I noticed some steps.  Up, down, up, down, until everyone caught up with me.  Hey, a new workout location with  beautiful scenery.  A few adjectives to decribe the area....beautiful, breathtaking, picturous, and romantic!  I love the lighthouse in the background and the beautiful different types of trees and plant life that will surround the wedding party.
Walking in the sand added resistance that I loved, and I make a mental note that a year ago I would have complained about the walk to this destination.  Not this time.  I just wanted to stay.  I love the beach, hearing the waves and allowing the wind to take me in.  Hey do I sound like a writer.  Hey this blogging has been so good for me.  It really makes me reflect on my days.  I will have to go back and read them after the challenge is over.  The photo to the left is a photo of my son-in-law, the surfer, and his daughter on the beach (photograph by Ben Powers).  Today I thought of them and how much I miss all of my family on the West Coast.

My bed is calling me...      ...night night to all!

Satuday - Busy as a Hive of Bees

When will I get to sit down to breath......Early start to the day, bible work, lunch with a friend (no worries...   ...a wonderful salad at Ted's Butcher Block...     ...a great place if you are looking for healthy food).  

Then off to meet Shawn at the pool.  Just as I go in the building I heard a familar voice that said, "Regina!" I jumped as if it was my mother or someone.  It was Janice just letting me know that Shawn was on her way -- caught in traffic.  I am flexible, though.  Another minute to breathe and an opportunity to ask Janice (the director of the program) some questions regarding my maintence plan of attack.  I have to start thinking about it now.  I don't want to wait and have to hear myself say "ooops!  Where did those 5 pounds come from?", or something horrible like that.  I appreciate all coaching.  

Off to swim with Shawn.  Shawn has that new-teacher-zeal, and I love it because her energy is contagious.  She comes with her list of outlined exercises.  Love it.  As you know, the water is my best friend.  Now Shawn gave me a relaxtion treat at the end...    ...almost as good as a massage.  Float on water with your eyes closed, remembering to breath deep, in and out, as and she holds you gently.  I never completly let go, but I am working on it.  I tell you I was close to going to sleep like a baby.  Maybe there is some mind connection to the body in water.  After all, is that not how we got here?  In a sac surrounded by our mothers water.  Today it's kind of funny, but that left me wondering what my mother would think if she could only see me now.  My weight was alarming to her since she had never been heavy nor seen me heavy.  

I played WII tonight, which was fun and it kept me from sitting.  

I get a call from family today telling me that my dad (in Toledo Ohio) has been rushed to the hospital.  Hopefully he recovers soon.  I am just trying to stay relaxed.   It's hard when you are not in the area.  Well, let's hope for the best.

Friday Not The Resturant!

This truly has been life changing for me!  Any other Friday, I would be at a place like Friday's having some high-calorie appetizer, main course, vino, and dessert.  (I've been off sugar for several months, so I almost forgot about dessert.)  Then the routine back then was to unzip jeans because I'd just eat too much.  I just consumed 1,000 calories in one sitting and did not realize it.  Then you have that regret and horrible feeling come over you.  Never again!!!  In fact, it makes me sick thinking about eating like that again.  It's so nice to eat healthy.  You notice the great taste in vegetables and fruits, which can even be a little too sweet at times!  Even the colors of fresh fruit and vegetables suddenly mean something.  Very appealing to the eyes.   I have come to really appreciate my kitchen because I can control what I put in the foods.  That will be my project next around the house.  Remodel and re-do my kitchen.  

My favorite store is Whole Foods.  I can stay in there all day.  Now that I have nutritional guidance, I can go through a label in seconds and say yea or nay.  Something I learned from HCC.  Just because it is in Whole Foods does not mean that is good for you.  The options are greater than most grocery stores.  I only wish we had a Trader Joe's here, which is a store we had in California -- a cheaper version of Whole Foods.  I have found a lot of items in Whole Foods that are cheaper than HT or other local groceries.  So quit frowning Ben!  I hate Super WalMart.  I am sorry, but why do those kids in there act as if they have no home training.   I love kids, but, for some reason, not in WalMart.  Please wipe their noses....that will make me not want to eat. 

Work out today with Laurie was great!  Once again, we work hard.  We all are kinda in a zone, with it being our last workout with Laurie this week.  It is amazing how far we have come.  I am shocked at how far I have come.  I wish my team would have known me when I was still taking physical therapy after my brain tumor.  They would be shocked at just how far I have REALLY come.  I won't go into the rest of the day because it may tell my closest competitor my final plan of attack (just in case she's reading this).  Next week, I will even share some of my best dietary tips.   So, I will save the best for after the competition phase of the program is over.  It's really simple.  I will tell you, however, that my body adjusted to a lot of my workouts.  I am not nearly as sore nor do I have any injuries.  This means that I have to work even harder for results now. (frown)

I find myself very emotional right now.  I can't stand to hear anything negative in conversation, on TV or anywhere.   It has been a lot of hard work.  I am very sensitive and will cry at the drop of a hat. Maybe working out is doing something to my hormones now.  Oh Lord!  Was menopause not enough!?!?!  Ladies, have you ever noticed the word "men" is in menopause...maybe because they cause the whole problem when Adam listened to Eve....LOL!  Just wanted to laugh.  It produces those great hormones.

I am on my way to bed anticipating the days ahead.

Next to Last Weight-In

Well, this week, my friends, I lost 3.8 pounds, which keeps me in first place!  I know that is what you wanted to know so I did not want to keep you waiting.  Thank you once again for all my supporters, especially my husband Ben.  I think he needs to be rewarded for his unwavering support.  There are many more, but I will save those thank you's for later, but I had to name the top one.  Ben has adopted the healthy life change right with me, and is willing to help me stay on this road.  Today was a bigger feat for me.  I achieved the goal that I made personally for myself, which was is to lose no less than 30 pounds with HCC. In less than 12 weeks.  I did it!!  That would put me now at 61 pounds on my journey!  I am very proud of how far I have come.  I cannot stop now, but I will be over my goal by next week for the challenge.  (I still have 10-15 pounds that I'd like to lose after the HCC challenge ends.)

I am very proud to let you all know that I am getting certified in group training, with a focus on water aerobics.  In fact, I have formed a small group of 4 people to work out with so that they can be ready for HCC in September.  Hopefully they get accepted.  I really feel great helping them.  I will continue on this journey myself and will be successful.  I am determined never to wear a size 16/18 ever again.   I am happy to announce that I was wearing a size 12, fitted skirt tonight.  I have a size 10 blazer that I can't seem to stop wearing, just because it says a size 10.  (LOL)  My goal is to get to size 8.  I think 10-15 more pounds may get me there (and I won't even be upset with  a few 10's) .  For me, this was not all about size.  It was more about getting healthy.  Putting a disease in remission.   The looking good and feeling good is just fruitage of my hard work.

Yes, I know some say you can't keep up this pace.  I wanted to end strong in the last two weeks, which was one of my goals, but I have NO DOUBT I will never stop working out.  I love it!  I am happy I was laid-off from my job now, because it allowed me to have this much-needed time.  The only time in my life that I have dedicated me to me.   I don't think 12 weeks is much to ask for yourself.  (If you are thinking about doing this.)

This has been so much fun for me!  I have met a lot of people who have struggled with the same issues.  My favorite has been water aerobics and Zumba classes.   Our team workouts were great, but more work than anything.  I can't say I love them.  I always felt good afterward, knowing I accomplished something that was hard for me, such as running.  I will keep up the running and the weight training I have learned from Laurie.   I have only dedicated 2 hours on an average to working out daily.  Seems like more.  I admit I added a little more this past week or my scales would not move.  I weighed myself everyday, and I learned from several mentors that I should continue to do so.  By the way, the one mentor tonight had me crying....so inspirational.  Great meeting.  After the program, we still have to weigh in for 6 weeks on our own....that is great (no competition, just follow-up).

Hey!  Don't forget me this week......still need you.  Some are wondering if I will continue to blog.  Well, maybe not every night.  Perhaps once or twice a week.  My plans for workout will be everyday at the time I wish to workout! (My schedule will be easier  now I can give more to my volunteer bible work.)  On the weekends, we plan on including workout or activities that will keep us moving...such as kayaking and biking.  My current menu selections will stay the same.  I love the way I am eating now.  I have more energy and feel great.  I will talk more about that after the challenge.   Many say I look younger, which I love to hear.  I humbly accept these compliments because I worked hard for the results.  Next week will be a celebration, no matter what.

Tonight I looked up at the end of the meeting and my husband was standing beside me.  Just like he always does.  Just a sign of his support.

Workout Baby!

This day was a great teamwork day. We sprint. We lifted. We grunted. No time to talk ....well with the exception of one time. Heather was asking me about lap swimming and water aerobics, and here comes Laurie. "I must not be working you hard enough if you are able to keep talking." So guess who had to do burpees. (Oops! I get to do burpees). Anyway. I felt young again, getting in trouble for talking in class. So Laurie made my day!

Shaun, the student who weighs me every week, created some water exercises and timed laps on the kick board for me today. She is too sweet and I really appreciate her helping. Normally, Marty is my coach in this area. I will have to tell him what a great job she did! I just love seeing the students (both at the scale...Boy! Another sad good-bye!)

Well, tomorrow is weigh-in. Got to get my needed beauty sleep! I admit I don't love the weekly weigh-in day. I will always weigh myself because I never want to wear another size 16 in my lifetime.

Tuesday is Over! YEA!!

Well today has been one crazy day.  I had a lot of errands to run today and business to take care of and it left me beyond stressed!  I used my new found skill of working out as a stress reliever and it worked.  That's after having what I call a little melt down on the phone with Ben.

I never thought I would say this but "I love spin class".  That 8 am class is a great way to get your day going! 
My nights, as you know, ends in the water aerobics..... my favorite.  After class, I ran into our young ladies who do our weigh-in's, and I was suddenly reminded of what is ahead of us in just 2 days!  How time flys when you are having fun. 

Can you believe I am going to end here?  Yes, again it's time for me to be short because I have a few things to do before retiring for the night.  Don't worry.  I am sure the next few days will get interesting.  Thank you for hanging in here with me.

Monday workout

Team work out was great today.  Everyone must have given their best!  Laurie is really pushing us to give it our all. Hey favorite line lately has been "Go get it" just one more lap! (keeping her better words you can do this...right here)   It makes me feel great and it really has been a good experience being a part of a team and having goals ahead of you.  Cappy Gina has really kicked in.  I have been busy sending out emails trying to encourage everyone for their efforts.  I have receive some emails from others on the team also!  I think that one day I will share a few.

Hey I am so tired, I cannot get my little video up on this blog.....bear with me.  I will get it posted before the week is over.

Can you believe I am going to end here tonight. When I have a lot of energy I tend to talk a lot (as if you did not already know that).  I stayed up way too late last night watching the Academy Awards.  I still have to remind myself I am not 30 any more, but I think that when you are getting fit, the 50's are the new 30's!!!  Hey I like that!

It's Sunday & I've Got Spring Fever

Beautiful day today.  Felt like Spring here.  I truly have spring fever.  I am so sick of cold weather and I am so looking forward to bright spring wear.   I went to the Pilates, Yoga and Nia combined mandatory group class today.  I love the dance part of Nia.  Anything that causes the hips to move.  The Pilates reminded me of being in Yoga. Boy!  I wanted to "sleep like a child" instead of sit like a child".  I learned today that if you don't want to or can't perform a position then is acceptable in Yoga / Nia disciplines to simply "sit like a child".  I kept moving, knowing how good this stretching and breathing is for my spine and my mind.  By the way, the bottom of my feet are really sore this weekend.  I am hoping this is not going to be a problem all week.  Help!

Then off to meet my friend Wendy, who is supporting me by walking the bridge with me.  Thank you Wendy, for having longer legs than me so I have to fight to keep up with you.  I truly enjoyed talking and watching the boats pass by.  I am signed up to do the Bridge Run!  I should do well since our trainer is running us every week and testing our endurance.  I am not experienced with marathon running, but I will tell you, I will run more than walk.  It won't be my last.  I did walk the Bridge Run two years ago, and I have done smaller ones such as the Light Up the Night Walk for Leukemia Society (2 years in a row) and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Breast Cancer Walk/Run.

Excuses to shop
Can't find my water bottle....remind me to look in lost and found.  Well anyway found a replacement for $5.  I refuse to use plastic and buy water.  I was also told by the ladies at the gym I was  in desperate need of a swimsuit that fits.  When I start jumping around and doing water aerobics routines, a few problems that I won't mention also start jumping.  Oh!  Anybody who knows me knows that I am not good at not telling .....well I almost "mooned" the back row one day.  It made me laugh so hard I almost could not do the next moves.  I am so glad no one noticed.  Well, at least I don't think they did.   I found a Speedo racing swimsuit that looks so much better on than my old one.  Looks tropical with the racer back. This lifted my spirits, and a few other things. My next swimsuit will be for the beach and it will be a two piece....    ...but not a bikini.  Somehow I cannot yet envision this grandma in a bikini but I have fond memories of many from back in the days. 

Well I am going to watch the Academy Awards.....I love movies and I love the dresses!  Off to my my private Oscar party  (hmmmm.... no vino, so I guess I'll have a green tea and lemon).  Maybe I will get out one of my nice tea cups.  My life is no longer centered around food.  I can sit back and just enjoy life.  Tomorrow I have a video to show you that a team member sent me.....   By the way, at times I will go back and read my blog and see at my sleepy moments I may have a typo and then I make the needed corrections.  I love blogging!  It reminds me of the days of writing in my diary but these new folks gave it a new name so it does not seem so juvenile and men will jump on the band wagon. (LOL)

Saturday at Chuck E. Cheese OH MY!

Today I overslept till 7:00 am..  I had a little headache from having no coffee.  Caffein withdrawls.   I had to go to my congregational Spring cleaning by 8:00 am. or it would only bother my conscience all day that I did not help my spiritual family.   I just pulled weeds.  Wish I could done more, but I was asked to take photos.  We all eat at noon.  I eat the only salad that they had. Everything was southern cuisine, or pasta.  You know what I mean.  I was proud of my resistance to all of that food.  So I eat this bland salad with a little olive oil.  I am glad I did not over work myself for what's ahead.








I took a lot of photos, but these are ones who have offered to walk the bridge with me, or just plain has been providing emotional support.  These are just a few...... from left to right, starting at the top are Pam and her Mom, Mel (holding the rake), Mickey, Wendy (Mel and Wendy are the couple.  They used to attend Janis Newton's classes), Natasha, Kristina, and Larry (or, as I call him, "Cuz", Pam's husband).


OK.  Moving right along....

Friends, I would rather be on a deserted island, with no food, than be at a "Chuck E. Cheese".  I did not like it when my kids were little, nor did I enjoy taking my grands.  It's seems like the worse behaved children go there.  Not to mention the snotty noses, to go along with the untolerable behavior.   My friend asked me to help chaperone a small party of four today, which, when I agreed, was to be held at her house.  When she said the "CC" word, I almost viewed it as bad as slapping and cussing me out at the same time.  How could I back out now!  So off I went in my car with 4 little ones happy as larks to be going.  Don't worry, I did not eat my favorite food, PIZZA with dripping greasy pepperoni.  I just kept thinking, "how unhealthy"!  When was this going to be over?  Well, we finally made it to the end.  I sighed quietly when I saw they were out of coins!  At last they get to pick out those toys that will probably be broken before we get home.  You know the junk I am talking about.  I actually loved it when we went back to her house to play games and gave out prizes.  Then I looked at my watch and saw I had to run home put on my sweats and be on the bridge in 25 minutes.  Off I went, with a little sadness because the kids did not want me to leave.  They were very sweet and well behaved.   Oh!  By the way, I was told today that after just one visit to this place, one of our team members told her kids Chuck E. Cheese went out of business so she'd never get asked to go back.  I laughed, thinking, "why didn't I think of that?"  (Just kidding)

When I got to the bridge I was greeted by Charles and Heather.  Kim joined us also.  Heather gave me a nice little basket filled with her wonderful little nectarines that she grows in of her yard.  Also in the basket was a hand-painted oyster knife.  I found out we are both two "artsy-fartsies"! Thank you Heather!  That was so thoughtful.   I like the little basket too!

Our team has really stepped up!  We are after these last few weeks together. I already know that It's going to be some tears when we part.  As we were doing our bridge run we got to the Charleston side, and Charles got dizzy when his blood sugar levels dropped and we had to get him something sweet (diabetic). Heather ran up to some bikers while I was holding his arm making sure he did not fall.  I just kept telling myself that I am strong and I could help him.  My old medical nursing mode kicked in.  Yes!!!  The bikers saved the day, they had sugar and plenty of it.  They gave him a whole box of hearts and gum.  Kim ran ahead trying to get candy at the gas station not knowing we would find candy from someone. (As you may have guessed, she is the fastest runner out of the three of us.)  Charles is home doing better.  We learned that diabetes sure doesn't love you.  Kinda sweet they gave him hearts to eat.  I wondered why college-age looking young men would have heart candy??  It was appropriate though.  Charles has such a big heart.  I'm just glad someone gave him some hearts.  (His grandson is the one with cancerous brain tumor at 18 months old. Charles continues to stand by his side.)  It was nice to see how we stuck together in a crisis.  Just as a team would.

So I am going to sit for a moment just to reconnect with my home.

Friday On The Run

When will I be able to sit down!!  I having been running around all day.  The team workout today was good.  Nothing out of the ordinary.  WORK HARD and no time for  rest  or to be weary!  I won't tell you my whole day because it will only prove to wear you and me out and I am trying to unwind for the day.
I can't wait to get in my electric bed covers.  Laurie gave us some homework, so I try to do a little before going to bed, hoping that these little things called "metabolism dance in my head".  While I am sleeping.  Is that too much to ask.

A few thank you's tonight...      ...first, to my daughter Tiffanie and her husband Justin.  They thought they'd send us a gift that would contribute to our new healthy lifestyle.   She even worded that on our anniversary card.   Two were gift cards to my favorite store (Apple) to download a bunch of music to workout with and when I find that needed time for relaxation.  The third card was for whatever that will fit in with my new lifestyle.  So off to another one of my favorite stores "Tar - jay", looking for something we both will enjoy.  I purchased a blender/food processor combo (on sale!).  Tonight I made us some healthy smoothies.   Don't worry.  No sugar added to them.  It's nice to have all of my family supporting me in this journey.  I must talk to all of them daily.  They continue to cheer me on.  We also will make a day this weekend to download some movies and music from the Apple Store to our ipods.  You Rock Justin and Tiffanie.  Get it?  Rock?  Grandpa/ma will be rocking.  I have learned a few songs from the gym.

My next thank you is to my Zumba teacher, Silva, whom I just think is the best.  She brightens my day every time I see her.  It is also so nice to see her and her husband together.  He is very nice, and it is clear that they are best friends, like me and my hubby.  Anyway she gave all of her class a pretty flowers on Thursday.  I was in my manditory class on Thursday, so I am not able to attend her class at that time.  So afterward I just came to say hi, and here come the flowers.  I thought that was so sweet.  It is very clear to me that Silva loves her job, but more importantly, she loves the people who surround her in those classes.

Hey I have some other supporters, but they want to be nameless for now.  At some point I will acknowlege you too if I have not already.  You know who I am talking about.

Not Weak 8. WEEK 8

Well I promised that I would end strong!  Even though it is not over yet.......I am back in first place!  I lost 4.2 pounds!

I am exhausted beyond words.  My body cannot go any harder than it did this week.  I met Sydney Fowler today.  She is my fierce competitor!  She seems to be a very nice young lady.  We are both pushing hard.  TEAM Mughelli came out of last place and we are pushing for the top!  The morale was high tonight.  Everyone had a loss!  We can do this team!  We can end strong!  We have really come together as a team.

I need to get my rest, since tomorrow is a team workout, and you know everyone will be revving up to end strong.  I found out today I am no weak woman.  Now I can say, I am WOMAN!  Hear me roar!!!!  Like I said not, weak 8, but week 8, I will not ever forget.  I worked for it.  I will tell you about it later.  Hey! I can't give away my secrets.

WWW (Wednesday Wendy Windy)

By now everyone should know that today is team workout day!   We went to the BIG weight room today.  It always makes us feel like Arnold Schwarzenegger in that room.  (LOL!)  It's where the big guys go.  I used to be a little intimidated in that room, but not anymore.   I love lifting weights now because I know that burn will last even after the workout is done, which means continual burning of calories which lasts much longer than cardio.  We did both cardio and weights today.  BURN, BABY!  BURN! Tomorrow is weigh-in day, leaving only 2 more weigh-in's after this week for the contest part of this season's HCC program.  Then two more weeks of individual exercise and classroom, ending with the Cooper River Bridge Run.  I am getting sad to see this end.....well at least this part of it.

Later this afternoon, my friend Wendy and I power-walked the bridge for an hour.  Wendy, windy and all.  (get it?)  It was very windy and cold up on the bridge.  I found myself trying to keep up with her after my morning workout.  She is in better shape than she thinks.   It's nice to surround yourself, as I have said before, with people who support you and have like attitudes regarding fitness and health.   I am looking forward to getting a kayak this year so that we can go out on the river with Wendy and her husband, Mel, again.  They live on Shem Creek, so you know they are pros.   My new found energy and strength will help with our next lesson out on the water.  Get ready for us!

Well this is short and sweet tonight because tomorrow is going to be a busy day.  I must get that much-needed rest.

Get Your Booty On The Dance Floor!

Today, as you know,  is my Zumba day!  Have you heard the old song "get your booty on the dance floor"?  Well, that's exactly what I did today.  I am really embarassed to tell you this story.  I was trying to keep up with our intructor, James, who normally does not teach on Tuesday.  His dance routine is very challenging because he is a professional dancer, I hear.  As you know I feel like I am in my 30's, at least lately, and I was trying my best to keep up with him.  Anyway, I did this cross over step and, somehow, flipped up on my butt, and hand.  Here comes James running off the stage to see if I was OK.  He sincerely was concerned and wanted me to go ice it.  The old dancer/athlete attitude kicked in and I tried to play it off.  "No.  I will wait till after the class.  It's half over."  Friends I will not give up.  Dust yourself off and get back up!   This is what I learned in life!  I want to dance again. It is my outlet of stress.  I took it easy the rest of the class, so don't worry, I am not that crazy.  When I was done with the class I rushed home to ice my butt.  Yes I took an old bag of corn out of the freezer and gently put it...    ...well you know where.  Hey!  At least I don't have to worry about getting any of the calories from that corn.  Don't worry!  I won't let anyone eat the corn!  I know  I am a little corny today....   Hey!  You've got to laugh at yourself.  I found out that losing a considerable amount of weight in the derriere did not help in this particular situation.  Now I nderstand why they say "baby got back" with enthusiasm! 

Next, came water aerobics with Marty....you got it.  Sprint, sprint spint....        ...and my booty is hurting, but I am going to keep pushing. Nothing is going to stop me now.  Lift- breathe - lift - breathe!   A lady and I were talking about our aquatic aerobics class and we both agreed that it makes you sleep like a baby!  You work hard but the water soothes and touches every bone and every muscle on your body.  I don't know about you, but I am watching The Biggest Loser and iceing my booty....

Last night I promised a few photos and I think that I have spoiled you all with photos........  ...hope you enjoy.  In the meantime, my butt is chillin tonight.

TGIM


Hey what a great weekend!!  I will post some photo's tomorrow.....I am much too tired tonight.  Thank you for the lovely Anniversary gifts and cards.  I treasure my family and friends.

Are you wondering why I title this blog TGIM instead of TGIF?  TGIF was my saying when I was working.  Now I made up a new one for Monday (TGIM) because I get to start my weekly routine.  Today our team workout was awesome!  Laurie had us run with those sandbags on our heads.  She was also was my partner in our workout.  I felt honored because this week I know I need a swift kick!  I felt really motivated today and Laurie noticed how hard I was working.  "Gina I love that attitude", because Monday is not always my best day.  It showed me that when you work on something so simple, you can change.  That is an attitude.  No one can do that for you. 

To top everything off, we had a nice sized group today, which, I think, raised the morale of our team.  We all worked hard!  Charles' grandson has suffered with cancer, so sad.  At the end of our workout today, he shared that the surgeons successfully removed most of it, with the exception of an area in the brain. The doctors are tying to figure out how do remove this growth from such a very delicate area.  This, you know, touched my heart.  I know how scary and difficult brain surgery can be, let alone a cancerous tumor.  Charles is trying so hard to still take care of himself, and we all understand why he is having a hard time.  The team came together at that moment and supported him.  The word T-E-A-M suddently meant something.  We all are very different, but have really come together to get healthy....some even emotionally, as you can see. . 

I also found out that the young lady that is fighting me for the number one spot is younger than any of my children.  Can you believe that I am giving her a run for her money!  I am over 35 years older than her, with a stubborn metabolism, but yet I have been in first place throughout the competition, with the exception of 2 weigh-ins!  Now I am proud of that!  I saw her during Sunday's workout and told her she is doing a great job trying to beat this old lady.  Good sportmanship is important to me.  Any other preception would bother me. 

My night always ends on Monday with Marty's class.....    ...a class which seems to be getting harder each week, probably because he has a lot of people who attend regularly.  I love the sprinting we do.  I love the hip excersice because that is where most of my pain was in the past.   I am positive that swimming and water excersice will be a life long habit.

OH MY!  I forgot to tell you!  I met my favorite news anchor lady, Carolyn Murray, from our local NBC station.  Yes, in Whole Foods Market.  I love that she is into fitness, and I began to tell her about the Healthy Charleston Challenge.  She listened intently to every word.  I even told her about my winning weeks and how much weight I have lost as a result.   From our conversation and her news broadcasts, I could tell that she does a lot of volunteer work in the community .  She looks even prettier in person, and very fit!  I plan on calling her in the future.  She even told me how to get in touch with her.
